Objective
In Chapters 1-5, the author provides a historical backdrop of Boston neighborhoods and how the Irish were not welcome in the 1800s. While money did not buy acceptance, the Irish could move into politics as a means of improving their social standing. The objective of this lesson is to become familiar with Irish immigration to America in the 1800s and its effect on the individual.
Lesson
1) Class Discussion: Lead the class in a discussion about immigration. Start with your own definition and ask the students to offer their perspectives. When Joe Kennedy arrives in Boston, he falls in love with Rose but lacks any social prestige. How does Joe's heritage benefit him? How does it hold him back? Joe is a millionaire but anti-Irish sentiment is strong in Boston. Discuss.
