Introduction to Rainer Maria Rilke:
Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926) was an Austrian poet, writer and art critic who wrote primarily in German but also penned more than 400 poems in French, dedicated to Switzerland, his homeland of choice. Rilke's poems and prose are rich with a spiritual vision of sexuality, powerful symbolism, metaphor, and nature imagery. Today's class will examine the biography of the poet, his works, and his influences and discuss Rilke's impact on literature and poetry.
