Lesson 1 (from Chapter 1, Linn County, Kansas, 1861)

Objective

In the beginning of Chapter 1 Jeff is plowing and remembering. The author uses the character's remembering to show the reader information. The objective of this lesson is to be aware of the importance of remembering.

Lesson

1) Discussion: Have the class discuss what the word "remember" means. Have the students speculate on why some memories are kept, even though they don't seem important, while the mind forgets others.

2) Classwork: Have the students write a short paragraph about a memory that they have. It can be from their childhood or a more recent one. Have the students speculate on whether or not they feel this memory will remain with them until they are much older.

3) Homework: Have the students rewrite the front of the book and create a different way to impart the information to the reader other than through Jeff's recollections. How does it change the reader's...
