Lesson 1 (from Rhinoceros: Act I, Scene I)
Objective
Introduction to the Book and Author:
Today's class is an introduction to Rhinoceros, and Other Plays by Eugene Ionesco. The students are given an introductory look at the playwright, his style, and his works and will research the biography of his career. Students will also discuss the plays to be studied and what is expected over the course of the lesson plan.
Lesson
1) Class Discussion: Introduce the book and its author to the class. Eugene Ionesco (1909-1994) was a Romanian-French playwright and one of the forerunners of the Absurdist movement. Rhinoceros, and Other Plays are all Absurdist in style and philosophy, which will be discussed at length in the following lesson.
2) Research Activity: Give the students time in class to do independent work on the playwright. Students should focus on the following areas for information:
• Childhood and education
• Style
• Reactions to current theater of his time...
