Chapter 1

• The novel begins with an introduction to Micah Mortimer, a 43-year-old man living in the north Baltimore neighborhood of Govans.

• The narrator describes Micah as a man whose routine was “etched in stone” (4).

• The narrator continues to describe how Micah divided his time between two jobs: during the day, he operates a tech-support company called Tech Hermit, and at night he acts as the superintendent of the building where he lives in the basement apartment.

• His personal life was quiet: although Micah had a girlfriend, the two led “fairly separate lives” (4), and Micah seemed to lack any male friends.

• The narrator then pondered if Micah ever considered his life and, if so, if it troubled him.

• The narration then moved to “a Monday...
