Lesson 1 (from “Redeployment”)
Objective
Redeployment is an award-winning collection of short stories by American author Phil Klay. Each of the twelve stories that comprise the collection is related from a different viewpoint, exploring different ideas and experiences during the Iraq War. The first story, which shares the same title as the book, introduces the setting of the Iraq War, which serves as a backdrop in each story. In this lesson, students will research author Phil Klay and Operation Iraqi Freedom, as well as analyze the narrative style and setting of “Redeployment.”

Research Activity: Conduct research on author Phil Klay, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and the publication of Redeployment. When was the collection of short stories published? How did Klay’s service in the Iraq War influence his writing? What has been the critical response to the book?
