Beef Bone

This object symbolizes the forced efficiency practiced by many families affected by poverty. Jimenez recalls searching through dumpsters with his family as they looked for salvageable vegetables and other foods. Once they had brought home the salvaged foods, the matriarch of the Jimenez family Joaquina would create a foundation for the other foods by utilizing this single object bought from the store.

Mission Garden

This object symbolizes the desire to withdraw from others. While Smokey and many other students at the University of Santa Clara attend sports events on campus and elsewhere, Jimenez chooses instead to take long solitary walks in association with this object.
