W. Somerset Maugham was one of Britain's most most influential authors.
The aim of this lesson is learn about Maugham's life and work.
Lesson
1) With the students, brainstorm what they already know about Somerset Maugham. What influence has he had on popular culture? What other books has he written? Do his books tend to be similar in their style and themes? Divide the students into pairs and ask them to research Maugham's life and write a short biography. On their return, discuss in what way Maugham´s life is reflected in Razor's Edge? Are any of the characters based on either himself or people he knows? What personal knowledge does Maugham bring into the book?
2) Brainstorm Maugham's novels with the students. What are about the books about? What themes do they cover? Divide the students into pairs and assign them each a book to research. Ask...
