Objective

This chapter introduces the Brangwen family and the Marsh Farm where generations of Brangwens have lived. The issue of class struggle is also depicted in this chapter when Mrs. Brangwen believes the vicar's children are seen as superior to hers.

The objective of this lesson is to better understand the class structure in English society at the time the novel was written.

Lesson

1) Re-read the first section of this chapter in class. Have a class discussion of the structure in English society in the early 1900's. How does the Brangwen family depict class structure in this chapter? Cite examples from the chapter where members of the family are not satisfied with their place in the class structure.
