In this lesson, students will learn the characteristics of the nonfiction genre and find the characteristics that are consistent with the book they will be reading.
Lesson
1) Individual in class writing - List as many nonfiction types or written material as you can think of - not necessarily books. What do the things on this list have in common? How do some of the things on this list differ from one another?
2) Partner activity - Go to the library and examine different kinds of nonfiction books. Ask the librarian for help if necessary. Write down the name of each book you examine. Beginning with the front and back cover, write down the characteristics of each book, including how the item is divided into sections, what if any graphics are used, the use of fonts, vocabulary peculiarities, etc. Choose at least five features that all...
