In Chapter 1, Williams makes it clear that her Granddaddy had his flaws; he ran an illegal liquor house and was prone to violence, even against his own family members. But Rabbit always felt loved and safe with her Granddaddy, a feeling she would not experience again for a long time after her Granddaddy's removal to prison for shooting one of his patrons, Miss Betty.
