"The Princess Diaries" is based around the diary kept by Mia Thermopolis, Princess of Genovia. Mia was given the book to help her express suppressed feelings and thoughts that might otherwise be bottled up inside. Discuss the premise of Mia's diary.

Lesson

1. As a class, discuss how Mia's diary creates the framework for the book. Is this a creative and effective way to structure a book? Debate. Do you think that Meg Cabot was able to capture the language and feelings that might be had by a 15-year-old girl in New York City? Explain. If the structure/language is not effective, discuss what might have been done differently to enhance or correct the story.

2. Write out a character list of the people mentioned in this chapter. Note specific character traits, how they relate to Mia and to each other. Create a bubble map of the characters...
