Objective
Prologue.
This chapter sets the stage for the struggles and psychoses that Tom and Savannah will deal with later in the novel. This lesson will develop the students' initial impression of the characters--especially Lila and Henry Wingo--in order to develop a context for understanding the novel.
Lesson
1. Character Sketch--Using the information Tom reveals in the Prologue, students will compose two brief character sketches of Henry and Lila Wingo. Students should gather as many details as possible from the Prologue about Tom's parents to develop an impression and understanding of the Wingo parents.
2. Group or Partner Discussion--Do you think Tom and Savannah will resent their mother in the future? Why or why not?
