• Chapters alternate between Sam’s first-person narrative (a journal written to his missing daughter) and third-person accounts that follow either Claire Scott or Lydia Delgado.
• Sam's chapters take place in the past.
• However, chapter abstracts use the present tense and provide a linear summary.
• Sam's chapters use Roman numerals, and Claire and Lydia's chapters use Arabic numbers.
• In Chapter i, Sam remembers when Julia disappeared at age 19, her mother and his ex-wife, told him that knowing what happened would be worse than never knowing the truth.
• His ex-wife believed knowing the details would tear him apart.
• Sam, however, needed facts.
• The sheriff thought she had run off.
• They organized search parties and searched everywhere they could think of.
• They knew she had been in a bar and...
