· The novel begins in the fall of the narrator’s freshman year.
· The narrator, a freshman named Lee Fiora, begins her story with her theory that everything that happened at Ault happened because she misunderstood her assignment in Ancient History.
· Lee believed she was to present a speech on the architecture of Ancient Rome, but her “heart lurched” (4) when Jamie Lorison presented on that topic first.
· When Mrs. Van der Hoef asked Lee to begin her presentation, Lee expressed her confusion.
· Mrs. Van der Hoef explained that Lee had been assigned to study athletics and, explaining it would not be possible for her to prepare a new presentation, required Lee to give the presentation she had prepared.
