Lesson 1 (from Superstitions: Page 1-47)

Objective

Setting. "Practical Magic" is set in Milton, New York, in the present time. Although it is set in our world with the majority of the setting the same as the real world there is magic involved that is not known to exist in the real world.

The objective of this lesson is to look at setting.

Lesson

1. Homework. Students will rewrite the basic plot of "Practical Magic" and set it in another century, explaining how the different setting changes the work. For example, what would be different if it was set in the 1800's?

2. Class discussion. Could "Practical Magic" have been set anywhere? How does the setting make this a unique story? How do the people in New York in this quasi-real world differ from the students' hometown? How did the setting affect the characters? The plot? The themes? Why is the setting important?
