One of the very first sentences we read in this novel tells us that Henry went for the job as a postal worker because he thought it would be easy. The objective of this lesson is to study how the opening sections of Chapter 1 establish that Henry ("Hank") Chinaski is a middle-aged alcoholic with an attitude, willing to buck any system, and void of ambition.

1) Class discussion: In class, discuss what we learn about the main character, Henry, in the opening parts of the book.
