Lesson 1 (from Chapters 1-2)
Objective
The objective of this lesson is to examine what is revealed about Silas's relationship with his mother, and what her violin symbolizes about that relationship. Silas takes his mother's violin with him when he goes to search for his father. Even though it seems improbable, Silas remembers his mother and the day he was born.

Class Discussion: What memories does Silas have of his mother? How long did Silas have his mother in his life? What seems improbably about their relationship? How does Silas seem to remember his mother and their relationship? In Chapter 2, when and why does Silas think of his mother and the short time they had together? Why does Silas take his mother's violin with him when he goes to look for his father? Why is it important to him? What does the violin represent and symbolize about their relationship?
