James Michener's "Poland" is the topic of study. Michener, an American author with more than 40 works to his credit, experienced fame on bookshelves, the big screen and television. Today, students will open their study of "Poland" with an introduction to the author.
Lesson
1) Class discussion: Introduce the book that the class will study. "Poland" is the story of three fictional families told amidst a collection of Polish history. Michener wrote the book after much research, taking four years to complete. Why might a writer concern himself with so much historical detail for a fictional book?
2) Small group activity: Break the class into groups of three or four, creating enough groups to research these topics: the author's family life, the author's educational background, the author's work history, the author's writing successes.
