John Corey begins the novel convalescing on his uncle's porch and fighting boredom. He determines that the problem with doing nothing is not knowing when you are finished.

In Chapter 1, John is staying at his Uncle Harry's house, which is an old-fashioned 1890's Victorian farmhouse. It has a large wraparound porch and unique turrets and gables.
