Chapter 1: Torn from the Nest
Making Choices. The decisions, actions and events of the entire book are dependent upon some of the choices made by the adults in Bobby Beck's life in the first chapter. It is important to be conscious of the alternatives in every choice because only then can the consequences of those choices be identified. The objective of lesson one is to examine the responsibility of the freedom to make choices and expand the students' awareness of their ability to act responsibly.

1) Class discussion: The perception of not having a choice comes from failure to identify all possible alternatives or viewing the consequences of alternatives as unacceptable (as opposed to simply undesirable).
