Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the author’s background and personal interest in the subject matter reflected in the novel.
Renee Watson is the author of Piecing Me Together. She is a New York Times best-selling author, educator, and activist. Piecing Me Together won a Coretta Scott King Award and Newberry Honor. She has written poetry, children's books, and books for young adults, many of which has received awards and recognition. Watson often writes about Black identity, race, the experiences of Black girls and women, gender, and class. The objective of this lesson is to explore how Watson's background and passion for activism shape the story, characters, and conflicts readers face in the early chapters of the novel.
