1. What kind of relationship does Beth have with Philip at the beginning of the story?

At the beginning of the novel, Beth is obsessed with Philip and Philip takes full advantage, making her do his daily chores while he plays the guitar. Beth's mother questions why she would do this for him and it is effecting her school graded, but Beth calims that she get as much out of Philip's guitar playing as he get out of watching her do his work.

2. How does Philip fool Beth at the beginning of this chapter?

At the beginning of the chapter, Beth is walking with her sister to catch the bus when Philip runs out into the lane, waving frantically and shouting the bus is coming. Beth and her sister sprint, reaching the side of the road out of breath with Philip smiling at them mischievously. He was joking; the bus has yet to come.
