Chapter 1 of Phantastes contains the exposition, which is the first element of the plot of a story. The exposition introduces the setting, characters, and events important to understanding the story. The objective of this lesson is to learn about exposition.

Tasks, Ideas, Challenges, and Homework

1) For class discussion: What is the first element in the plot of a story? What is the function of exposition in a story? Why is exposition important? What information does the author present in the exposition of Phantastes? Be specific.

2) Groups: Divide the students into groups of three or four. Have the students discuss the question: From what you have read in the exposition, what do you predict will be stronger in Phantastes--plot development or character development? Why?

3) Individual: writing assignment: Have the students write a paragraph addressing the question: Does the exposition make you want to continue reading...
