Objective

Objective: When the gunfire erupts, Ryan relies upon his instinct and training to try and get the situation under control. Examine the scenario. Discuss instinct and how it is typically used in a dangerous situation.

1. Several times throughout the book, a character is called upon to trust his/her instincts. In some situations, people will act on instinct rather than on training. Examine this fact and how the reaction could be beneficial or harmful. Discuss pros and cons. Also discuss how primitive instinct takes over when one's logic is affected by fear. How was that primitive instinct formed? Does everyone have it? What might you have done in Ryan's place?

2. When faced with certain danger, people commonly react in a "fight or flight" manner. One will either stand up and fight or run away, depending on the circumstances. Create a live situation in which instinct may overtake...
