The author uses the back stories of Irene and Clare and a flashback sequence in these sections. This lesson explores how effective these literary devices are in setting the premise for the story.

Lesson

1) Class Discussion: Discuss how the flashbacks and back stories of the characters set up conflict and develop one of the main themes of the book.

2) Debate: Divide the class into groups. Have half of the groups discuss the advantages of using flashbacks, and the other half the disadvantages. Then, have either side present their case, with points and counterpoints.

3) Partner Discussion: Break into partners, and have partner teams discuss how they could use flashbacks to write their own back stories.
