Lesson 1 (from Chapters 1-2)
Objective
Students will compare and contrast the forms of stories versus poems and will investigate the author's use of poetic language within the prose text.
Victor Martinez had written only poetry for years before writing Parrot in the Oven: Mi Vida, his debut novel. By examining the differences and similarities between the two forms and by searching for evidence of Martinez's poetic language skills within the novel's narrative, students will see how the two forms can come together to produce engaging and aesthetically beautiful texts.
Lesson
Class Activity: Draw two intersecting circles on the board to form a Venn diagram. Label one circle "Stories" and the other circle "Poems." Discuss as a class the following questions and use your comments to fill in the Venn diagram: In what ways are poems like stories? In what ways are they different?
