Manny

This 14-year-old is the main character of the novel. He is smart, gets good grades, and is a hard worker with ambition. Often sucked into the center of his family's volatile situations, he serves as the voice of reason and the one who keeps calm and does what he needs to do to bring the family out the other side of any moments of conflict or violence.

Rebecca

This character is the protagonist's mother. She holds the family together and struggles to keep the bills paid and the children fed. Feeling caught within a cycle of abuse, she does not leave her husband or tell the police what he has done, even when he has just run after her with his rifle, trying to shoot her. She dreams of Manny achieving big successes in life that will break the family's chain of poverty.
