Hoonie
This character is born with a cleft palate and bent legs to a fisherman and his wife. Because of Japan annexing Korea and conditions of hunger while his family has plenty, he is able to get a wife which previously was thought impossible. This character loves his daughter dearly. He eventually dies of tuberculosis.
Yangjin
This character is married at 15 because her family does not have enough food for all of them. She has three infant deaths before a daughter survives. After the death of her husband, she takes care of a boarding house in Korea to support herself and her daughter.
Sunja
This character is deeply loved by her father. She has an affair with a business man which leads to a pregnancy. A visiting minister marries her and takes her with him to start a new life in Japan.
