Ourika was a young slave girl from Senegal who was rescue from slavery by Chevalier de B. just before she was to be taken aboard a ship and most likely sold into slavery. At only two years old, Ourika's mother died, leaving her without any family. If it had not been for the chevalier, Ourika would have followed in the path of many other children sold into slavery.

2. Who is Joan DeJean? What is her position at the University of Pennsylvania?

Joan DeJean is the Trustee Professor of Romance languages at the University of Pennsylvania. DeJean is an award winning author whose research includes the history of writing by French women, history of sexuality, novel development, 17th and 18th century French literature, and late 17th and early 18th century French cultural history.
