Lesson 1 (from Chapter 1: The Scope of Orientalism, Part I: Knowing the Oriental)

Objective

This lesson introduces students to Edward W. Said’s nonfiction book about cultural representations of the East as defined by misinformed perceptions of scholars in the West. Students will read the Introduction, research the author, examine the time period in which the book was written, and discuss the definitions and various meanings of the term “Orientalism.” Orientalism, as defined by Said, is based on patronizing representations of the East and has maintained a superior view of the Occidental versus the Oriental worlds.

Lesson

Research Activity: Take time in class to conduct research on the author and the publication of his book Orientalism. Where was Edward Said educated? What was his field of study? When was Orientalism first published? What was the international atmosphere during this time period? Develop a brief written paper or presentation that examines the author, his career, and his other works.
