Lesson 1 (from Part I (Chapters 1 - 2))
Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze how Evans uses the historic 2008 U.S. presidential election to set the tone for the novel. The first chapter opens with minor characters throwing a large party for their friends to celebrate the 2008 election of Barack Obama, the first black American president. The atmosphere is infused with hope and optimism, but there are also acknowledgements and memories of the ugly historical events and related to race and violence lurking beneath the surface. This sense of foreboding below the veneer of happiness also relates to the main characters' sets of relationships.
