Chapter One
• Stephanie Plum and her working class Trenton, New Jersey neighborhood known as "The Burg" are introduced.
• Stephanie reminisces about Joe Morelli, the neighborhood bad boy, looking under her skirt at age 6 and being her first sexual experience when she was 16.
• Desperate for money after being laid off from her job as a lingerie buyer at E. E. Martin, Stephanie asks her cousin Vinnie, owner of the Vincent Plum Bailing Bonding Company, for a job as a bounty hunter.
• Stephanie learns that the first fugitive assigned to her is Joe Morelli, now a vice cop and wanted for the murder of an unarmed man.
Chapter Two
• Stephanie stakes out the parking lot of Morelli's apartment building and sees his cousin, Mooch Morelli, retrieving some of Joe's belongings.
• Stephanie follows Mooch to a downtown apartment where Joe Morelli is hiding out.
• When Stephanie confronts Joe at his hideout...
