Objective
One Crazy Summer is a historical children’s novel by Rita Williams-Garcia. Set during the summer of 1968 in Oakland, California, the narrative follows the lives of the Gaither sisters, Delphine, Vonetta, and Fern, as they visit with their mother who abandoned them some seven years before. This lesson introduces the class to the first chapter, “Cassius Clay Clouds.” Students will research author Rita Williams-Garcia and boxer Muhammad Ali, analyze the setting, and discuss the narrative style of the novel.
