Lesson 1 (from Section 1: "One Art" lines 1-19)
Objective
The objective of this Daily Lesson is for students to explore the characteristics of the villanelle.
"One Art" is a well-known example of a villanelle. The form, however, may not be familiar to students. This lesson acquaints students with the basics of the form, asks them to apply this information to a famous villanelle, and then asks them to consider how the form impacts their experience as readers.
Lesson
Presentation: Prepare a brief presentation for students on the characteristics of the villanelle. Ask students to take notes in preparation for the next activity. What is the definition of a villanelle? What is a quatrain? What is a stanza? Does a villanelle have to rhyme? Can you think of any famous villanelles?
Partner Reading Activity: Divide the class into pairs. Distribute copies of Dylan Thomas's poem "Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night" (available online). Ask...
