Objective
The objective of this Daily Lesson is for students to analyze Sexton's exploration of the long-term impacts of racist terrorism in the American South in the early 1900s through Vivian's personal experiences and family history. Within the book's first chapter, Sexton explains that Vivian's father, a Black man, was killed in Louisiana by the Ku Klux Klan, and that she could not wait to move away from her memories of that traumatic tragedy. The event was the catalyst for her move to California in search of a better life.

Class Discussion: What does Sexton tell the reader about Vivian's past within the first chapter that explains why she moved from Louisiana to California?
