• Each chapter focuses on the experiences of one of four main characters, Vivian Jones, and her three daughters Ruth, Esther, and Chloe.
• The first section is "Vivian," set in 1953 in Fillmore, California.
• Vivian Jones was a Black woman and a nurse who had grown up in Louisiana and whose father had been murdered by the Ku Klux Klan there, which made her want to leave the state as soon as she was able to with her husband, Ellis.
• Ellis had died fairly young when Vivian and he had two young daughters, Ruth and Esther.
