• This book is written from the first person point of view and the present tense unless otherwise noted. The narrator is a teenager named Brianna Jackson, or Bri.

• In Chapter One, Bri is at school doing a practice test for the ACT and waiting impatiently for a call from DJ Hype, who runs a freestyle rap performance venue called The Ring.

• Bri is a freestyle rapper and hip-hop performer looking for her big break to launch what she hopes will be a successful and lucrative career.

• Bri's teacher, Mrs. Murray, has taken her phone and will not give it back until the end of the exam period.
