This character is the male protagonist of the novel. He has recently gotten married to his new bride when the narrative opens. This character used to get in fistfights, but he now tries to behave in a more refined manner in order to avoid embarrassing himself.

This character is the female protagonist of the novel. This character suffered sexual abuse at the hands of her father. While she loves the male protagonist very much, she has not yet admitted to herself the extent of her abuse, so she certainly cannot share it with her new husband.

This character is the father of the female protagonist. He has a type A personality, as shown with his extreme competitiveness when playing tennis with his future son-in-law. This character is strongly implied to have sexually abused his daughter during her childhood and adolescence.
