Objective

Chapter 1

This chapter begins with Travis summing up his feelings for Old Yeller as well as the plot of the book in the first two paragraphs of the novel.

The objective of this lesson is to recognize the three major themes of the novel introduced in this first chapter.

Lesson

1 Have a class discussion about the three themes of the novel as described by the narrator in this chapter: First the theme of coming of age, second the theme of survival, and finally the theme of family. Ask the students how they think these themes will play out in the novel.

2 Homework: Have the students reread the first chapter, making note on when the three themes of the novel appear in the chapter. Write an essay citing examples from the chapter about each of the three themes and predict the events and outcome of the novel...
