Lesson 1 (from Part I: First Aid (12-27))
Objective
The objective of this lesson is to introduce imagery as a literary device and teach students how to properly analyze visual symbolism. Imagism plays an important part in Nell’s memory; she imagines fanciful what-if scenarios and dwells on memories of the past. The joy that these images conjure helps illustrate her final argument that obliviousness can be fun.

Class Discussion: What is the literary definition of imagery? Can you provide instances of imagery that you have encountered outside of the book? Can you think of a reason why an author would use imagery? Do you know what symbolism is; can you define it? What is the effect of using an image to convey meaning versus outright stating its meaning?
Small Group Activity: Divide students into small groups and ask them to locate instances (with appropriate page numbers) of imagery within the book. Students will...
