The "professors" were not people that had achieved some high level of education. They were people that simply professed their faith in what they considered to be the basis of true religion. The professors wanted to break free from the Church of England because the Church and its officials were becoming entirely too power and money hungry, something that did not fit in with the professors' beliefs and/or needs.
