Chapters 1-4
• Philip is woken up in the middle of the night to see his mother, who is dying from a stillborn childbirth. She is dead by morning.
• Philip's uncle William comes to take care of the funeral. He is a clergyman who never approved of his doctor brother or his wives.
• Philip is told to choose one item from the house to remember his mother by. He chooses a clock, and lies on her bed to feel near her.
• William is Philip's guardian. He is taken to Blackstable and is made to walk a long distance, which is hard with his clubfoot.
• William has a boiled egg when they get to the vicarage. Philip is given nothing because of the expense.

• William receives some pictures that his brother had taken of his wife. He thinks they are signs of vanity and only lets Philip keep...
