Objective

The objective of this Daily Lesson is to explore background information on Walt Whitman and the poem's occasion. The poet Walt Whitman was a patriot who served as a nurse in the Civil War and believed strongly in the Union cause. He was devastated by Lincoln's assassination and wrote "O Captain! My Captain!" as an elegy for the fallen president. This lesson asks students to research Whitman's beliefs about and service during the Civil War, then asks them to predict the content of a poem Whitman might have written on the occasion of Lincoln's death. Then, it asks them to read the actual poem and compare and contrast its content with their expectations.
