Choose Music for the Poem
Since Whitman though of his poetry in terms of music, this is your chance to decide what kind of music, exactly, should accompany "O Captain! My Captain!" Choose a piece of music without lyrics that seems to you appropriate to the rhythm and subject matter of his poem, and provide a link to where you found the music. Then, explain briefly what is appropriate about your choice.
Write an Elegy or Dirge
Choose a historical figure--from any period of history--who has passed away. Write a poem of at least ten lines mourning the loss of this individual. Your poem should be metrical and rhymed, but you may break the pattern you establish to create effects, just as Whitman does.
