Lesson 1 (from Part I (Chapters 1 - 13))
Objective
The objective of this Daily Lesson is for students to analyze how the burning of the forest, and its aftermath, during Ven's childhood affects him later in life. In Part I, Ven's home in the forest is destroyed and many people, including his dear friend Vae, perish. Ven also sees, clearly, a "kakuy," or god-like spirit that embodies the earth. Seeing the kakuy makes Ven realize how powerful and sometimes terrifying the spirits are.
Lesson
Class Discussion: Where is Ven when the forest burns? How does Ven survive? Who does Ven lose who is close to him? How does Ven cope with Vae's death?
Small Group Activity: Divide the class into small groups and ask each group to complete the following writing exercise by answering questions together: How do both Ven and Yue cope after losing Vae? How does losing Vae affect Ven's and Yue's friendship...
