This object symbolizes the link between twenty-first-century technological developments and environmental destruction. O'Connell points out the ways in which nearly every new technological development in the late twentieth century and early twenty-first century require electricity. While in the late 1970s, the environmentalism movement sought to reduce the consumption of energy, human activity in the twenty-first century has all but forgotten this goal as consumers choose convenience over sustainability.

This object symbolizes the search for resources to deal with an unprecedented problem. When O'Connell first begins to collect these objects, he does not know the exact nature of his drive to examine them. He knows that he believes cognitively that humans have likely reached a point of no return in terms of climate change and our inevitable demise, but he also retains hope, if only for his son's sake.
