Objective

Chapter 1

The objective of this lesson is to give students a short introduction to the author and the novel. To understand the characters in "Norwegian Wood" and the environment in which Murakami was writing it, it is important for students to have some idea of Japanese culture. This lesson will also give students a basic background in Japanese cultural, political and economic conditions.

Lesson

1. Have students review bigraphical information on the author. What in Murakami's life might lead him to set a novel in the 1960s? Why is this novel so different from his other work? Why do you think he chose to do that? Why would that have upset his fans? Do you find it interesting that he felt the need to escape his homeland after it became so popular? What does that say about the nature of fame in Japan?
