Wig

This is a hair accessory that the protagonist in "Something That Needs Nothing' wears for her job. When her closest friend (Pip) -- whom she is in love with -- sees her in this wig, they start sleeping together after months of no contact. The wig symbolizes the narrator's acknowledgement that the only way she can experience Pip's love and affection is by being someone other than herself.
