Lesson 1 (from Part I (Chapters 1 - 5))
Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze Bardugo's graphic descriptions of the prognostication rite that Alex attends in Chapter 1. The prognostication is an occult-type ritual performed by one of the secret societies, or "Houses of the Veil" at Yale University involving a live, unconscious human patient whose abdomen is cut open. A leader of the ceremony, called a Haruspex, calls out stock and financial market predictions as he pokes and prods the patient's intestines. The rite is grisly and disturbing, and Bardugo employs vivid imagery to describe it and the main character Alex Stern's reaction to it.
